Ms. Red's Horse Cookies
About Us
Eight years ago our mare, Lady Red (Ms. Red), was diagnosed with Cushings. At that time this
was devastating news and very little was known about how to manage horses with Cushings
successfully. Shortly after her Cushings diagnoses, we ran more blood work and found her to be
Insulin Resistant as well. We were lucky enough to find a group of people on the cutting edge of
research and with their help we managed to pull her back from what seamed like a hopeless
situation. This group helped guide us through adjusting her diet. Through those years, we learned
a lot about nutrition and the benefits of a low-carb diet.
One of the things that we missed the most about changing her diet was the restriction of treats,
fruits and vegetables. So, she went without for years. We searched and searched with the hopes
of finding an affordable treat that she could safely eat and finally we gave up and decided that we
would make our own. We knew that this was going to be quite a challenge but the satisfaction of
being able to reward our horses for a job well done would be worth it!
We baked for more than six months before coming up with a low-carb/low-starch treat that our
older horse and our younger horse could both safely eat. We sent many batches off to the lab to
be tested until the numbers were just perfect. Our goal was to get the cookies under 10% NSC
(non-structural carbohydrate). 10% NSC is a general recommendation for the maximum
percentage of NSC to feed horses with Insulin Resistance. Our Original cookies are at 5.2% NSC
and our Peppermint cookies are 10% NSC.
We did not intend to make a business out of baking horse cookies but word spread and we
started getting all kinds of requests for them. That is when we realized that there must be others
just like us searching for a healthy alternatives to the sugar filled treats on the market today. So,
Ms. Red’s Horse Cookies was born!
Theses cookies are a great alternative for any horse.
Oh yeah, your dogs will love them too!

For a job well done!
